Shashur Monastery
State : Himachal Pradesh
City : Lahaul and Spiti

The main structure of the Shashur Monastery consists a three storied building, erected atop a hill at a narrow site about 600 meters above the valley. Shashur Monastery is associated with the Red Hat sect of Tibetan Buddhism or the Gelukpa order, and it has spiritual connections with the Lion cave Temple of Bhutan. The pathway leading to Shashur Monastery is a bit difficult, and as you reach the monastery, a beautiful 'mani wall' (piles of prayer stones) will catch your attention.
The stones on this wall bear inscriptions of the sacred Buddhist ritual 'mantra' or invocation - 'Om Mani Padme Hum', meaning 'the jewel in the heart of the lotus'. Among the attractions within Shashur Monastery include a 5 meter 'thangka', exquisite wall paintings representing the history of the 'siddhas' of Buddhsim, and a statue of Namgyal.
